Uses:

Glutaraldehyde is a highly effective broad-spectrum biocide and crosslinking agent. The 50% aqueous solution is a concentrated form used as a starting material for various applications.

· Disinfection & Sterilization: A high-level disinfectant for medical equipment (e.g., endoscopes) effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and bacterial spores.

· Tissue Fixation: A primary fixative for biological specimens in histology and electron microscopy, preserving cellular structure by crosslinking proteins.

· Industrial Crosslinker: Used in the production of resins, plastics, adhesives, and to modify biomaterials and leather.

Origin

It is a synthetic organic compound. The commercial 50% solution is produced by dissolving glutaraldehyde in water, sometimes with stabilizers (e.g., up to 10% methanol) to prevent polymerization.
